Shimla, located at an altitude of 2200m, is the capital and largest city of Himachal Pradesh in India. Surrounded by breathtaking hills and dense forests, Shimla has been a sought-after destination for families and newlyweds for the past 50 years.
The British were so fond of the city that they made it their summer capital in 1864 and used to govern the subcontinent from here during the hot summer months. Today, Shimla still holds onto its vintage charm with charming colonial architecture, a pedestrian-friendly Mall Road and lovely churches.
Tourists visit Shimla throughout the year, with the weather being particularly pleasant during the summer months. Winters are cold, with occasional snowfall from mid-December to the end of February. Visitors flock to the centrally located Mall Road and the Ridge, a pedestrian-only area that features numerous shops, cafes and restaurants.
